CAVES IN THE MOON

THE MOON HAS CAVES!

Scientists have made an astonishing discovery: a deep cave on the Moon, potentially over 100 meters in depth.

Located on Mare Tranquillitatis, the same spot where Apollo 11 landed, it was found using radar technology.

This cave formed millions or even billions of years ago and could be similar to volcanic caves on Earth.

A coordinator of the European Space Agency, Francesco Sauro:

“We have very good images of the surface - up to 25cm of resolution - we can see the Apollo landing sites - but we know nothing about what lies below the surface. These caves are known as lunar lava tubes or lunar caves. They were formed billions of years ago when lava flows solidified on the surface, creating a hard crust, while the lava beneath continued to flow, eventually draining out and leaving behind hollow tubes.

These caves can be found in various regions on the Moon, particularly in the dark, basaltic plains known as "maria." Some of the most notable lunar caves include:

Lunar Cave 1 (LC-1)

Lunar Cave 2 (LC-2)

Lunar Cave 3 (LC-3)Marius Hills Hole

Shackleton Crater

Lunar caves are of great scientific interest, as they may provide valuable insights into the Moon's geological history, potential resources, and even possibilities for future lunar habitats or bases.
